Authorities say a Fort Myers woman was arrested after her 1-year-old son drank her methadone and was left partially blind and unable to crawl.

Lee County Sheriff's Office said that Anna Highland, 27, did not seek immediate medical attention when she found her son on the floor with a bottle of liquid methadone -- which is used to treat drug withdrawal -- close by, Fort Myers News-Press reports.

Highland reportedly then put her child down for a nap and then also fell asleep for several hours, according to News-Press. When she awoke, she noticed her son would not wake up and called 911, police say.

The child suffered brain damage after experiencing severe oxygen deprivation and “is partially blind and can no longer crawl or pull himself up,” News-Press reports.

Highland is charged with medical aggravated child assault. The baby was released from the hospital and put into medical foster care on Sept. 28, according to News-Press.
