Pilot diverts international flight to save dog in cargo hold

Sept 16, 2015

A Canada-bound flight from Tel Aviv diverted to Germany because the pilot believed that a four-legged passenger in the cargo hold might be in danger.

According to ABC News, an Air Canada spokesman said that there was a temperature issue in the cargo hold:

"Air Canada's pilots are professionals who are responsible for the entire flight. As soon as the crew became aware of the temperature issue, the captain grew rightfully concerned for the dog's comfort and well-being," Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said.

The plane diverted to Frankfurt and a 7-year-old French bulldog named Simba was transferred to a different Air Canada flight.

"While we recognize this was an inconvenience for our customers, the overall reaction was positive, particularly once people understood the dog was in potential danger but safe as a result of the diversion," Fitzpatrick said.
The original Air Canada flight (Flight 85) was delayed only 75 minutes from its original scheduled arrival time after the stop in Frankfurt.
