Detective Luis Alvarez, who spoke to the House Judiciary Committee last month about the Sept. 11 Victims Compensation Fund, was honored with a hero's sendoff Wednesday in Queens. First responder Alvarez died from 9/11-related cancer days after his testimony at the age of 53. His death was announced by Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea, who tweeted that Alvarez was "an inspiration, a warrior, a friend."
