Joseph Oberhansley is being held without bail at the Clark County Jail in Louisville, Kentucky. He is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Tammy Jo Blanton, and then eating parts of her body, including her brain.

According to a Reuters report, the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to the county's sheriff, requesting that Oberhansley be placed on a vegan diet.

In the letter, PETA claims that removing meat from Oberhansley’s diet could “diminish that bloodlust” and help protect jail staff and fellow inmates.

Acting sheriff Brian Meyer confirmed receipt of the letter, but initially thought the letter was a prank.

Oberhansley is being held without bail. His trial is scheduled to begin in February.
