Another American woman reportedly died at a Dominican Republic hotel just days before a Maryland couple was found dead at the same resort.
According to WLS-TV, Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, collapsed and died at the Bahia Principe Hotel in La Romana on May 25. Her cause of death was listed as respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, Fox News reported.
Schaup-Werner, a psychotherapist, had taken a drink from the hotel minibar before her death, Fox News reported.
"Was this a poisoning? Why wasn't that question originally investigated by the local police?" her family asked in a statement obtained by WLS. "Is it just normally assumed that a healthy 41-year-old suddenly dies like this? Is this a pattern?"
Schaup-Werner's death came less than a week before Edward Nathaniel Holmes, 63, and Cynthia Day, 49, of Prince George's County, Maryland, died at the resort.
Holmes and Day missed their scheduled check-out Thursday, according to news reports. When hotel staffers went to check on the pair, they found the couple dead in their room, according to WJZ-TV.
An autopsy reportedly revealed that they died from respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, as well.
Police found medication for high blood pressure in the room, but found no signs of violence, the news station reported.
"We are deeply saddened by the incident at one of our hotels in La Romana, Dominican Republic, and want to express our deepest condolences to their family and friends," Bahia Principe Hotels said in a statement, according to CNN.
The U.S. State Department told Fox News that U.S. Embassy officials are "actively monitoring the investigations by Dominican authorities" into all three deaths.
