The world's first penis transplant recipient is expecting his first child, BBC reports.
His girlfriend conceived the baby naturally and is reported to be about 4 months pregnant.
In December, the 21-year-old South African received the first permanent penis transplant from a donor. His original penis was amputated due to serious complications from a circumcision at age 18. The amputation left him with only one centimeter of his penis.
Dr. Andre can der Merwe, one of the surgeons, told BBC that he was “pleased” to hear the news.
“This is what we intended, that he should be able to stand up and be able to urinate and have intercourse, so it is a milestone for him,” he said to BBC.
Doctors said many South Africans are in need of penis transplants because many die to have serious complications from botched circumcision procedures during "traditional initiation cermonies," BBC reports.
