An apparently fake Facebook threat posted by someone claiming to have connections to people working in national security said on 9/11, the Black Panther Party plans to go to schools and universities and kill white students, then target white cops, Gaston police officials said.
The post claims to be a direct order "for your child's safety," telling readers "to make sure they are armed at all times."
The post named ForestView High School and was brought up by a student there, triggering concern among officials and parents.
"From Monday to Wednesday, apparently the story grew," Gaston police Capt. Bill Melton said.
Some Forestview High School students are worried.
"I think it's just rumors, but I (am not) coming to school Friday," student Trestont Chastain said.
"Nowadays, you have to consider everything credible because you never know," one parent said.
Over a 24-hour period, police and school officials said they were swamped with calls from concerned parents.
"Officers have been inundated with calls on their off-duty time,” Melton said. “The 911 center phones lit up this morning."
Police said they followed posts and message back to the source and discovered it's just a rumor that mushroomed.
The principal sent emails and a recorded message to all parents.
"The police have investigated and believe the information posted on Facebook is a rumor," the email read.
