A Florida panther kitten is living behind the scenes at Naples Zoo, after being found emaciated in the woods, about a half mile from where its mother was struck and killed in traffic.
Wildlife experts with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said the 4-month-old kitten is too young to be expected to live in the wild, so she will be kept in human care for the rest of its life.
The mother panther had three kittens. One was found dead, a second was never found and the third one was rescued in a trap on Nov. 2.
Several witnesses helped FWC locate the kittens.
“We are grateful to everyone who provided us with the information that led to the successful capture of this kitten,” said FWC panther biologist Dr. Dave Onorato.
According to a news release from FWC: "When she is placed in a permanent home, her story will be a valuable tool in educating the public about panther conservation, what the FWC does and what the public can do to help."
