The organization held its 17th annual Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Luncheon on Saturday, trying to raise money to help North Carolina students and historically black colleges and universities.

The organization had raised a little over more $1.1 million, but when Winfrey started speaking, she announced she would match it.

"I'm also here today because I believe in the power of education. There is nothing better than to open the door of opportunity for someone," Winfrey said.

Winfrey's donation means the organization exceeded its $1.5 million goal.
