An Oklahoma lawmaker is proposing a bill that would put an end to marriage licenses in the state.
Republican Rep. Todd Russ introduced House Bill 1125 to take county clerks and judges out of the marriage license process. Under the bill, a certificate of marriage must be signed by a church or other religious official before being filed with a county clerk.
According to the bill, without a signature from a church leader a couple may file for an affidavit of common law marriage.
Russ is an opponent of same-sex marriage, which became legal in Oklahoma last year when the state's same-sex marriage ban was ruled unconstitutional in federal court.
