State prisons spokeswoman Pamela Walker said in a news release early Monday that Kristopher McNeil is behind bars at the Davidson County Jail.
Authorities said McNeil, 29, of Winston-Salem escaped Saturday. He was serving a sentence for second-degree murder.
On Sunday, a 33-year-old prison kitchen worker was charged with helping him escape.
Walker says citizens recognized McNeil from media reports and called law enforcement. She says he was picked up walking along a road near the Davidson/Forsyth County line in central North Carolina, more than 80 miles north of Polkton, where he'd been incarcerated in the Brown Creek Correctional Institution.
Prison officials say McNeil is believed to have scaled the fence at the prison's minimum-security unit.
