Norwegian Cruise Line is banning all single-use plastic water bottles on its ships beginning in 2020 with the goal of eliminating the plastic waste entirely by 2021.
Norwegian announced Wednesday that starting Jan. 1, it will begin replacing plastic bottles on its fleet of 16 ships and on its private islands with paper water cartons, according to news reports.
The company projects the switch will save up to 6 million single-use plastic bottles every year, USA Today reported.
"The elimination of single-use plastic bottles across our fleet is just the latest environmentally responsible action we are taking to reduce our footprint and encourage others to protect our natural resources," Norwegian President and CEO Andy Stuart said in a news release.
The company is partnering with JUST Goods Inc., a company founded by rapper and activist Jaden Smith and his family, Stuart said.
"The Just Water container goes as far as technology allows today in eliminating anything not renewable or recyclable in a container that will store water," Stuart said about the replacement cartons.
Just cartons are made of 82% renewable materials, mostly paper, with a cap made of sugar cane.
This latest move follows Norwegian’s ban on single-use plastic straws in 2018.
