"Have a beer, doctor's orders," Mildred Bowers of Mount Pleasant told WCSC last week during her birthday party at Page's Okra Grill.

Bowers, who started drinking a beer at 4 p.m. every day after the doctor at her assisted-living facility said it was OK, said fellow senior citizens should feel free to enjoy a frothy beverage "if they like it."

"Look, there are people who don't like coffee and people who don't like tea, but I want everyone to drink what they like," she told WCSC.

Bowers, whose birthday is Aug. 31, also credited her longevity to genetics.

"It's all in the genes," she told WCSC, adding that she is in "good health" and her "mind is good."
