The National Zoo has announced that one of the two panda cubs recently born to Mei Xiang died after a rough night of nursing.

The zoo said both cubs are in "a high risk time."

The larger of the cubs is with the mother and appears to be fine.

Twins are fairly common among panda births, the zoo said.

Mei Xiang was born on July 22, 1998, at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, Sichuan Province. She weighs about 230 pounds.
