Must-see: Texas teen with cerebral palsy defies odds, walks at graduation
A Texas teen who has cerebral palsy has overcome obstacles to make a longtime dream come true: walking at graduation.
According to KTRE, Abrie Lopez has used a wheelchair since childhood because of the illness, which restricts her mobility. But she's always wanted to walk.
"She's been working on this for a long time," her brother and caretaker, Adrian Lopez, told KTRE. "She's been going to therapy since she was like 6 or 7 months old."
Her hard work paid off Saturday when she walked across the stage to get her diploma at Diboll High School's graduation ceremony. A video of the touching moment shows the audience applauding and cheering her on.
"I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I can do this all by myself,'" Abrie told KTRE.
Adrian said he wishes their parents, who passed away, could have been there.
"Our parents had always talked about her graduating," he said.
Adrian also offered some advice to others facing adversity.
"Don't give up," he told KTRE. "I mean, nothing can hold you back. If you have a dream, just follow your dream."
