A 24-year-old mother of two is being fondly remembered by her Little Village neighbors after her actions may have spared the lives of her two young children.

WGN reports that Korissa Valdivia Chupp was found on the floor with her arms around her two children, Jerry Jr., 6, and Kiara, 2. Firefighters believe she was trying to shield them from flames and smoke.

The mother was pronounced dead a few hours after the fire was reported. The father, Jerry Valdivia, escaped but was reportedly severely burned trying to save his family. The father and son are listed in critical condition, and the daughter has been upgraded to serious condition. The family’s dog was revived at the scene, and neighbors say the barking helped alert them to the fire.

The fire began in the basement apartment of a house where the family lived. The fire was mainly confined to the living room, but the source of the fire has not been determined yet, according to fire officials.

The apartment did not have a working smoke detector.

Neighbors say things had been looking up financially for the young family, and they had been planning on purchasing a home in the neighborhood.
