A group of primates gave new meaning to the term "monkeying around" Sunday when they escaped from a research facility in Yemassee, South Carolina.

According to the Island Packet, 19 monkeys broke out of a cage at the Alpha Genesis lab about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. By Sunday evening, all of the monkeys were back on the facility's property, WSAV-TV reports.

Yemassee Police Chief Gregory Alexander said a loose cage was to blame for the escape.

"It's not the first time it's happened," he told the Island Packet. "They come back because they (know) where the food's at."

About 5,000 monkeys live in the lab and another facility nearby, where they are bred and sold for research, the Island Packet reports
