A California mother was shot to death in front of her son and a police officer after she apparently laughed at a man in another car.

Hawthorne police said the woman, 44-year-old Denise Berry, and her son were driving in traffic when they saw a man hanging his feet out of the window of another car.

Lt. David Coleman said she and her son made eye contact with one of the men in the car, who began pursuing them.

"This is what the little boy is saying, 'Mommy says, look at that, isn't that funny,'" Coleman told the Daily Breeze.

Berry noticed the men following her and flagged down a police officer, who told her to park near him.

When Berry pulled her car in front of the officer, the other car caught up and a man opened fire with two guns. The officer returned fire, killing the shooter, but not before Berry was fatally hit.

The gunman was identified by police as Robert Washington, 38. Two other men in the car, Brandon White, and Stanley White, were arrested.

Berry's son fled the gunfire and was injured, but is expected to recover.

Coleman told the Daily Breeze, "It appears to be random or misguided."
