McCormack also performed with The Roadducks, who confirmed his death Saturday on social media.

"Phil was a fabulous, singer, band mate, brother, and human being," the Roadducks said in a statement. "Collectively we spent thousands of hours that turned into thousands of days together, creating an unbreakable bond few people are fortunate enough to ever experience."

McCormack joined Molly Hatchet in 1996 but had performed with the group in prior years as well playing harmonica and singing. The band formed in 1975 in Jacksonville, Florida and released numerous albums with many changes to its lineup over the years.

A cause of death has not been released.

Six soldiers were honored, each receiving Meritorious Service Medals, Thursday for heroic actions responding to the shooting at Fort Stewart. “One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers — under stress and under trauma and under fire — absolutely saved lives from being lost,” U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told reporters as the six soldiers stood near him Thursday. “They are everything that is good about this nation.” (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
