A middle school student was investigated by police in Ione, California Monday when they were found in possession of methamphetamines.
The Ione Police Department said in a statement Wednesday that the eighth grade student claimed a pink tablet was Smarties candy, but it tested positive for MDMA/methamphetamines.
The police said it was believed to be an isolated incident.
KOVR reported that Ione Middle School staff noticed something was odd when two students were seen exhibiting strange behavior at lunch Monday.
One student took the tablet and brought it up to his nose to sniff it. He was then seen handing it to another student, who sniffed it as well.
"It's the first time in my career I've ever had this, and I've been in the business 46 years," Principal William Murray said.
The school said marijuana and alcohol are on their radar, but they were not aware of having to deal with such a highly addictive drug.
Melissa Coviello, a mother of four, told KTXL she is teaching her children not to take candy from anyone.
"It is very, very scary, and I had to sit down and go through and show not only (my) seventh-grader but also the little ones: You just can't take candy from anyone anymore," she said.
The police department is planning to have a meeting for parents and school staff to address the concerns.
