A little boy has beaten the odds and is going home after nearly a year in the hospital.

Trevor Frolek was born during the 23rd week of his mother's pregnancy. Delivered weighing only 1 pound 6 ounces, Trevor was so small that his dad was able to fit his wedding ring on Trevor's foot, WDAY reported.

His skin was gelatinous, easily torn and easily bruised. Nurses wrapped the tiny baby in plastic just to keep him warm.

Trevor survived heart surgery, eye surgery, problems eating and fragile lungs, but 345 days after he was born, he left his hospital for the first time, the "Today" show reported.

Doctors said that long stay wasn't a record, with some babies staying in the hospital for two years or longer. And it was a bittersweet discharge for everyone. Nurses and other medical staff said they grew attached to the little fighter.

"A lot of days we left here and were not sure we would see him again, and to see him do well. This is the best reward we could ask for," Erin Kuehl, a NICU nurse told WDAY.

"We are so happy for the family. Our place will feel a whole lot different without him here," nurse Vicki Holtan said.

Trevor will be on oxygen and a feeding tube and will be on heart and oxygen monitors to alert his parents if there are any problems, "Today" reported.

And another milestone for Trevor will happen in a few months. His mom Becky is pregnant, so Trevor will be a big brother soon.
