Memphis, Tennessee, police Officer Verdell Smith is dead after being run over by a suspected shooter's vehicle Saturday night, authorities said early Sunday.

Police said an unidentified suspect is in custody after critically shooting two people near Westy’s on North Main Street, then running to Bass Pro Shops and shooting another person.

After the shootings, police said the male suspect got into a vehicle – it is not known if the vehicle was his or if it was stolen – and drove to the  area of Third Street and Beale Street.

At this point, police said the suspect, Justine Smith, 21,  struck the 46-year-old officer with the vehicle.

The 18-year Memphis Police Department veteran was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Verdell Smith leaves behind his children and fiancee.

Justine Smith has been charged with evading arrest, theft of property over $10,000, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, three counts of attempted first degree murder and one count of first degree murder.
