Despite all the hustle-and-bustle of patron traffic underneath the stately pines between the No. 12 tee and the No. 13 fairway, it was hard not to notice an otherwise private moment taking place in a pinestraw-lain area far outside the ropes.
There, Mike Ryan bent down on one knee and took the hand of Jennifer Chesek. No one could hear what was being said, but those who saw knew what was happening. And when Chesek accepted the ring on her left finger, a dozen or so unrelated witnesses broke out in impromptu applause, startling the couple that was previously oblivious to anyone else’s presence.
A half a football field away in the adjacent fairway, Darren Clarke and Vijay Singh strode down the 13 fairway, unaware of the special moment.
Asked why he chose that spot at that moment, the groom-to-be smiled as he held his new fiance’s hand.
“Well, because our courtship involved a lot of golf,” said Ryan, a director of sales for Simmons Hospitality Bedding. “This is the first time Jennifer has been, so I thought Amen Corner would be the perfect place to do it.”
Chesek holds a job as an operations professional in Florida. Asked if this meant she’d soon be moving to Atlanta, she laughed.
“I guess I said yes to that, too.”
