A disabled Navy veteran from Maine was just looking to share a meal on Veterans Day. What he got was an outpouring of love and support -- and, lunch companions.
Lyndon Dale Flowers, of Lewiston, left a handwritten note at a local barbershop earlier this month, WMTW reported.
"Would someone like to take a disabled veteran to dinner on Veterans Day? No car. My treat," Flowers wrote on a note he left at Judy & Heather's Barber Shop in Lewiston.
"I wasn't gonna have anyone available to go to lunch with on Veterans Day," Flowers told WMTW.
Heather Swift, co-owner of the barbershop, posted Flowers' message on Facebook and the responses came rolling in.
"I've been getting calls from all across the country. Even people just wishing me well," Flowers told WMTW.
One Maine family offered to take Flowers out on Veterans Day, the television station reported.
"I went on Facebook for a minute and that just happened to pop up, and I said, 'I can't take you to dinner, but I can take you to lunch,'" Sandy Washer told WMTW.
Washer and her family drove the 22 miles from Norway to Lewiston on Monday.
"Well, veterans have a soft spot in my heart. My dad was in the Army for 20 years," Washer told WMTW.
Flowers said it "warms my heart" to know people cared enough to reach out.
Now, he is looking ahead to the holiday season.
"I've already got eyes on Thanksgiving and Christmas for dinner, ya know," Flowers told WMTW.
