Update  6 p.m. EDT June 15: Target issued a statement indicating that its registers are back online. The company said that the outage was not the result of a security-related issue or data breach. Target also assured customers that no personal data was compromised.

Original report: A computer glitch prompted long lines nationwide for Target customers Saturday afternoon.

"We're aware that guests are currently unable to make purchases at Target stores," officials said in a statement. "Our teams are troubleshooting now and we apologize for the inconvenience. We will provide an update as soon as possible."

Target stores suffered a similar outage five years ago when there was unauthorized access to its payment information system, the Dallas Morning News reported. Secure information was not at risk in that breach, company officials said at the time.
