Two children and an adult were killed and several people were injured Monday night when a vehicle hit a flatbed trailer carrying revelers on a Halloween hayride in an eastern Mississippi town, authorities told NBC News.

The three people killed were riding on the flatbed trailer and were all related to one another, Newton County Coroner Danny Shoemaker told The Associated Press. The wreck took place in the small town of Chunky. Shoemaker said two died at the scene and one died while waiting for a hospital helicopter.

“It was just chaos,” Shoemaker told the AP. The names and ages of the persons killed were not immediately released.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Andy West told WLBT of Jackson that three helicopters were needed to transport the injured to hospitals in Jackson and Meridian.

West told the station that a Ford F-150 truck rear-ended the hayride trailer.

Chunky, located about 80 miles east of the state capital of Jackson, has a population of about 325.
