Schools that have banned students from carrying smartphones have seen an improvement in the children's test stores, reported CNN Money on a new study from the London School of Economics.

The researchers said banning the phones is equivalent to an addition hour a week in school or increasing the school year by five days.

The study covered 130,000 students at 91 schools in England since 2001. It compared the results from national exams taken at age 16.

It found following a ban on phone use, test scores improved by 6.4 percent.

The effect on underachieving students was more significant. CNN Money reported the average test scores rose 14 percent.
