A Kentucky man died less than a week after becoming a new father and celebrating the birth of twins, WAVE reported.
Tyrese Garvin, 20, was at a Louisville hospital on June 23 when the twins -- a boy and a girl -- were born, the television station reported. When he left the hospital, he was walking down the street when he was shot by three teenagers in a drive-by shooting, Louisville Metro Police Department Lt. Emily McKinley told WDRB.
Garvin was taken off life support and pronounced dead just after 3 p.m. Friday, community activist Christopher 2X, who was speaking on behalf of the family, told the Louisville Courier Journal.
The twins were born prematurely and remain at University of Louisville Hospital, the newspaper reported. Garvin was taken to the same hospital after he was shot. The children's mother moved her newborns from the maternity ward to the intensive care unit, where Garvin was taken, to be near the father they would never get to know, the Courier Journal reported.
The teens accused in the shooting range in ages between 14 and 17 years old, police said. The males were arrested, but specific charges were not immediately available, WAVE reported. Their names were not released because they are juveniles, the television station reported.
"It's just a hard impact for me because I know I'll never see him walk through that door and act silly with me anymore, but this is just so senseless," Kathleen Roberts, Garvin's grandmother, told WAVE.
Garvin's family created a GoFundMe page to cover medical and funeral expenses. As of Monday morning, more than $24,800 had been raised.
"He did not deserve to be shot like he did," Roberts told WDRB. "He's going to never be able to see his children, and they're never going to know their father."
