Ship halted

Amid rising tensions in the Persian Gulf, Iranian vessels fired warning shots Tuesday across the bridge of a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship, then boarded it while forcing it to sail toward an Iranian port, a U.S. military spokesman said.

Unclear reason

It was not known why Iran flagged down the ship, though it may have strayed into Iranian waters while traversing the narrow Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. dispatched a destroyer and aircraft to monitor the situation.

Fraught timing

The action comes as the U.S. and other world powers are trying to complete delicate negotiations with Iran on an agreement to rein in its nuclear program, and could further complicate the process.
