In a Facebook post, the Jennings County Sheriff's Office called the incident "a terrible accident."

According to the Sheriff's Office, William E. Waltermire, of Commiskey, was mowing his yard around 1 p.m. when the toddler ran toward him. The boy's grandmother, Beverly Waltermire, was chasing the boy when he fell, the Indianapolis Star reported.

While Walter Waltermire was backing up his mower, the boy was caught under the mower, the Sheriff's Office said.

The child was taken to the Sheriff's Office and then transported to an area hospital, WXIN reported. He was then airlifted to another hospital, the television station reported.
