A Rhode Island man said he had no idea that his wife was missing after she apparently fell overboard from their sailboat in Narragansett Bay Friday afternoon.

The couple, who was not identified, was on the way from Newport, Rhode Island to East Greenwich, Rhode Island, The Associated Press reported.

The woman was found on Prudence Island by a passing boater who heard her crying for help around 4 a.m. Saturday, hours after she apparently fell.

The woman had mild hypothermia but refused treatment, The Providence Journal reported.

The woman's husband was found about two hours earlier, at 2 a.m. after he ran the boat aground. He told police that he didn't know his wife was missing and that he thought she was sleeping below deck, the AP reported. He said the last he had seen his wife was earlier in the afternoon, the Journal reported.

The incident is under investigation.

"The story's a little cloudy," Coast Guard Petty Officer Sam Van Lent told the Journal.
