The Fort Pierce Police Department, in a Facebook post, chronicled the rescue of a 6-week-old pit bull puppy as Hurricane Dorian loomed in the Atlantic Ocean in the Bahamas.

Officers Martin Ortiz and Michel Jean responded to a call from a resident, who told them the dog was too young to be left in a shelter cage, police officials said. The woman also said she was unable to care for the puppy.

Jean and his family immediately bonded with the puppy and decided to take care of it, police officials said. After some prodding from fellow officers, Jean decided to name the puppy Dory, as a shortened version of the hurricane's name.
