Hunter drowns while reportedly trying to retrieve deer

A 51-year-old father is dead after drowning Friday afternoon.

We're told the incident happened around 1:15 p.m., at the Kiamichi River.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol say Stephen Newton's daughter shot a deer with a bow.  The wounded animal then ran into the river.

Newton went into the water to retrieve the deer.  A short time later, he went under and never resurfaced.  

Crews were back out at the scene early Saturday morning to recover the victim.
