Don’t forget to hug a lawyer Friday.

In an observance that may have escaped the attention of most people, including attorneys, Friday has been designated National Love Your Lawyer Day by the American Bar Association – 14 years after it was created by the Fort Lauderdale-based American Lawyers Public Image Association.

Broward County attorney  Nader Anise, who founded the organization to improve the reputation of his profession, decided in 2001 that the annual observance should be on the first Friday in November. His designation got juice this year when it was endorsed by the national group.

In a resolution embracing the day, the American Bar Association noted that the public perception of lawyers is not good. The day, it said, was a way to help change that view by encouraging people to remember the good attorneys do.

Nadar said attorneys should prove their worth by using the day to offer free legal services or make charitable contributions. But he is also hopeful lawyer bashing will cease at least for 24 hours.

So far, the jury is out.
