Georgia Republican U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson voted Wednesday against expanding the national background check system for gun purchases to gun shows and Internet sales, banning certain military-style weapons and limiting the size of magazines.

On those votes Chambliss and Isakson sided with nearly all members of their party and some moderate Democrats. The duo had been sought as swing votes on the background-check measure after they had voted to break a filibuster and begin debate on the gun bill – a vote that brought them criticism from some gun-rights groups.

While voting against all the Democrat-sponsored amendments, Isakson and Chambliss voted in favor of some Republican gun measures, including an effort to make a concealed carry permit issued in one state to valid in all states with a concealed carry law.
