A New Jersey hiker, mauled to death by a bear in September, took photos of the bear just minutes before the bear attacked, The Associated Press reports.
Police in West Milford have released the images taken by Darsh Patel before he was killed by the black bear while hiking in the Apshawa Preserve.
The bear, which is seen in the photos behind a fallen tree, put puncture marks in the phone, authorities told AP.
The New York Post reported the bear started coming at Patel and a group of friends he was hiking with. They split up and ran away. When they regrouped, they realized Patel was missing. Two hours later, the Post reported, Patel was found with the bear lingering nearby.
