Here's what happened when a military mom stood up for her son at a Mike Pence rally

When the mother of a military veteran identified herself Monday at a Mike Pence rally in Nevada, the crowd cheered for her – at first.

But then she asked Pence about the comments that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has made about the military, specifically the family of a Muslim Army captain who was killed in action during the Iraq war.

“Time and time again, Trump has disrespected our nation’s armed forces and veterans, and his disrespect for Mr. (Khizr) Khan and his family is just an example,” the woman said.

“You’ve got a son in the military — how do you tolerate this disrespect?”

And then the crowd started to boo her.

Pence calmed the crowd before saying that the woman and the audience had both shown the best parts of freedom.

“That’s what freedom looks like and that’s what freedom sounds like,” he said.

Pence honored the memory of Capt. Humayan Khan.

Khan’s parents were thrown into the national spotlight last week after they gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention that criticized Trump.
