An Illinois community is making headlines and warming hearts after neighbors came together to help a terminally ill farmer.
According to WTTV, grain farmer Carl Bates of Galva has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. As Carl's health continued to decline, his cousin, Dan Bates, worried that Carl and his family would not be able to harvest their 450 acres of corn.
But luckily, the community came to the rescue. After Dan spoke to some neighbors and friends, word quickly spread about Carl's situation. On Sept. 25, 40 volunteers arrived at the farm with 16 semi trucks, 12 grain carts and 10 combines. Just 10 hours later, all the corn was harvested.
Carl, who is now in hospice care, was touched by the support and thanked his neighbors for their help, WTTV reports.
"This is one less thing (the family has) to worry about," Dan said. "If they need to sell (the corn) to pay bills, it's done. They can now worry about Carl and take care of him."
