The heart-wrenching moment a male kangaroo cradled his female companion as she died was captured by a photographer in Australia.
According to the Daily Mail, Evan Switzer noticed the the kangaroos while going for a walk in Queensland on Monday morning.
“I saw the male pick up the female, he looked like he was just trying to get her up and see what was wrong with her,” he said.
Switrzer said he ran home to get his camera and snapped a few photos of the kangaroos.
The photos show the male holding the female and she lays on the ground. A joey stands beside the two, and the female kangaroo appears to reach for her joey one last time before passing away.
“The young one looked kind of confused, it would stand by the mother and then hop off and chew some grass, and then come right back again,” said Switzer.
Switzer said the female kangaroo had no visible wounds.
