Update, 4 p.m. local time -- A handcuffed man who attempted to flee a pretrial facility in downtown Atlanta by jumping from a window to the sidewalk below has died, police spokeswoman Elizabeth Espy said.

Original post - A handcuffed man attempting to flee a pretrial facility in downtown Atlanta was in "extremely critical condition" Tuesday morning after leaping out a window and falling multiple stories to the sidewalk below, police said.

Atlanta Police Department Homicide Cmdr. Capt. Michael O’Connor said the man — identified only as a male in his mid-20s — jumped through a window at 34 Peachtree St. SW, a 32-story building near Woodruff Park. Fulton County Sheriff’s Lt. Dan Cochran, whose department provides security at the pretrial facility, said the man was there for a “pretrial intervention” related to a drug charge.

He was taken into custody, however, when “a weapon found in the building was determined to belong to him.”

“He was handcuffed in a conference room when he attempted to escape by jumping out the window behind me,” O’Connor said at the scene.

A hole in a third-story window was visible from the surrounding streets, which were closed for more than two hours after the incident. O’Connor said the man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with several broken bones and a head injury.

Justin Israel, a waiter at the nearby Anatolia Cafe and Hookah Lounge, said he witnessed the commotion just after 10 a.m.

“It’s extraordinarily shocking,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

Atlanta police will investigate the man’s fall, O’Connor said, while the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office will launch an internal investigation into “all events that occurred leading up” to it.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” Cochran said. “Everyone’s shocked, but they’re also doing their job.”
