The Florida woman who was accidentally shot by her 4-year-old son will be charged relating to the incident.
According to the Ocala Star Banner, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office is pursuing a misdemeanor charge of unsafe storage of a firearm against 31-year-old Jamie Gilt of Jacksonville.
Gilt was questioned by police after she was shot in the back by her son on March 8 while she was driving and the child was in the backseat.
Investigators believe that Gilt’s son may have been able to access the weapon, which wasn’t holstered, after it slid the back of the truck while she was driving. Gilt told investigators that she believes that her son, who recently learned how to unbuckle himself, may have left his seat to get a toy, but grabbed the gun instead, The Ocala Star Banner repors.
When questioned by investigators as to whether the gun’s safety was on, Gilt said “Clearly not, if he was able to pull the trigger,” according to the Ocala Star Banner.
Gilt, who hasn’t been arrested, may face up to 180 days in prison if found guilty of the misdemeanor unsafe storage of a firearm charge. She may also face charges for child endangerment.
The State Attorney’s Office has yet to decide whether they will prosecute Gilt on any charges.
The Florida Department of Children and Families also opened up a child protective investigation, which is still ongoing.
