The top layer of glass covers the glass bottom below, according to WBBM-TV.

Tower officials said no one was ever in any danger and that the protective layer did what it was expected to do, WBBM reported.

Chicago resident Jesus Pintado recorded the scary scene as it unfolded and told the news station that there were sightseers on the glass box when it splintered.

“There was a woman with two kids and they looked really pale and scared because the floor just cracked,” Pintado said.

The same thing happened at the Chicago tourist attraction in 2014. No one was in any immediate danger in that episode either.

CNN reported that the sightseeing ledge attracts about 1.5 million visitors a year.
