A 7-year-old girl left alone with her 6-year-old sister drowned after her mother left them because she said she needed a break Thursday.

The girl's body was found floating face down by a man who heard screaming, according to KDVR. The man used a pole to pull the girl from the water. A woman also came to help and administered CPR.

"We do not believe any family members, specifically the mother, was home at the time when the child found her way to the pool and subsequently drowned," Julie Brooks, spokeswoman for the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office, told KDVR.

Eve Gbeugre, the girl's' mother, first told police she was gone a few minutes only to say later that she left for more than an hour, according to KDVR. Gbeugre, 27, told police the girls were misbehaving and she needed a break.

The DA's office indicated it is not pursuing charges at this time so it can release the mother, according to KDVR. However, because the investigation is still open prosecutors are not ruling out the potential to charge her later.

"Investigation into this matter will continue, and charges may be filed against one or more persons in the future," the district attorney's office said in a statement.
