France is expected to join Italy, Spain and Israel by creating a law banning too-thin models appearing in advertising and on catwalks.

The bill would enforce regular weight checks, which would require a medical certificate. Models would need to have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 18.  A woman who is 5 foot 7 inches tall with a BMI of 18 would weigh around 121 pounds.

Models, staffers and agencies could face fines or  jail time if they failed to provide these certificates.

The initiative was partially inspired by the late French model Isabelle Caro, who may have died as a result of immunodeficiency due to anorexia.
