A woman was taken out of PNC Park on a stretcher Monday night after being hit in the head with a foul ball during the Pittsburgh Pirates game against the Chicago Cubs.

The woman was walking to her seat behind home plate during the second inning when a foul ball went into the netting and hit her in the head, knocking her to ground.

The game was delayed for 23 minutes while medics treated the woman who was eventually taken out of the stadium on a stretcher.

There was no immediate word on her condition.

The Pittsburgh Pirates released the following statement following Monday night’s game:

"During the top of the second inning a female fan was struck in the head with a foul ball.

"After initial treatment by PNC Park and Pittsburgh EMS personnel, she was placed on a stretcher, moved to a nearby ambulance and brought to the hospital for further treatment. She was conscious and alert at the time of transport, graciously thanking her caregivers while giving a 'thumbs up' gesture to nearby fans.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her.

"We will share additional information as it becomes available."
