The former owners of a dog found with its muzzle taped shut say they may know who committed the act of animal abuse.

The Staffordshire terrier mix was originally named Diamond, but rescuers have renamed her Caitlyn. The 15-month-old dog suffered life-threatening injuries after she was found with her muzzle taped shut. According to rescuers, the dog may have been left in that condition for up to 48 hours.

The owners, who were not identified by name in the ABC News 4 report, claim that the dog caused damage to their home and they were afraid of being evicted. In need of money, the couple said they sold the dog to a man on Memorial Day for $10.

The couple regretted that decision when the dog showed back up in their yard a couple of days later, with her muzzle taped shut.

A description of the man who bought the dog has been provided to local animal control authorities.

Meanwhile, Caitlyn’s condition has greatly improved since she was brought in, but the Charleston Animal Society says that recovery will be months and surgery may be required to deal with her serious injuries. Caitlyn is currently receiving treatment in a hyperbaric chamber at a veterinary specialty clinic in hopes of saving her tongue.
