To address negative stereotypes in the black community one man is cutting his dreadlocks to make a statement.

Even though some say appearance shouldn’t matter, Dominick Davis, 41, said his hair is holding him back, so he’s getting a haircut for the first time in 10 years.

“It's time for a change, because enough is enough,” Davis said.

Davis was getting his haircut as part of an Operation Save Our Sons initiative. The group works to address negative stereotypes in the black community.

Davis is an ex-offender and served six years in prison. He’s now trying to enter back into society, by first getting a job.

“People feel like everyone that has dreads are bad people or they're criminals,” Davis said.

He said that stereotype is portrayed more and more with recent crime in Jacksonville.

“You turn on the TV and if they have a suspect, the description is a person with dreads," Davis said. "You absolutely have to dress. You can't go on an interview with jeans, T-shirt. You're basically selling yourself."
