The prison employee who allegedly provided contraband to two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum-security prison in upstate New York has been arrested.
A state official told CNN that Joyce Mitchell was in police custody. A press release from the New York State Police states that Mitchell has been charged with promoting prison contraband 1st degree and criminal facilitation, 4th degree.
Mitchell, 51, was a prison tailor shop instructor and reportedly told authorities that she thought her relationship with prisoner Richard Matt was love. She originally agreed to be the getaway driver but got cold feet.
Matt, 48, and fellow inmate David Sweat,34, escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora Saturday.
The district attorney’s office is also investigating Mitchell’s husband to determine his role, if any, in the escape plot. Mitchell’s husband also works at the prison.
Meantime, over 800 officers are searching for the pair of escaped convicts.
