An Asheville, North Carolina family said Purina dog food poisoned their healthy puppy.

Sandi Boniello said she was feeding her 11-month-old German shepherd mix Purina's Beneful dog food.

One day she said he became sick and the vet diagnosed him with acute kidney failure.

Within days the puppy had to be put to sleep.

"When we have cases that don't make sense, when you have a dog that suddenly develops kidney failure ... that should raise some questions … Why did that happen?" said Dr. Randy Wetzel of Regional Emergency Animal Care Hospital.

Boniello's claim comes as a class action was filed this month against Purina on behalf of about 3,000 pet owners.

They claim their dogs died under similar circumstances after eating Beneful.

Purina has not recalled the food and said the suit is baseless.
