Dozens arrested in NYC protest against police violence

Nearly three dozen people had been arrested by 6:40 p.m. during a protest on the Brooklyn Bridge against police violence Tuesday.

More arrests were expected overnight, according to the New York Times.

The demonstration blocked traffic during the evening rush hour and there were  reports of assaults on police officers, according to the report. An off-duty police sergeant was reportedly punched as he got out of a car; another officer was reportedly hit in the head with a beer bottle.

The march, organized by the Stop Mass Incarceration Network, started at Union Square about 2 p.m. and by 4:15 p.m. had spilled onto the Brooklyn Bridge, disrupting traffic for hours.
